September is Gynecologic Cancer Awareness Month. Accounting for 9% of all women’s cancers, gynecological cancer is rarely discussed as openly as other forms of cancer. Little is known about the support that women need during and after treatment. Since 1999, the Foundation for Women’s Cancer has been striving to raise awareness about gynecologic cancer.
At The O.R. Company, we “share the purple love” and support clinicians and the clinical research that is needed to prevent, detect and treat this deadly disease and ultimately, to find a cure.
Gynecological cancer affects the tissue and organs of the female reproductive system. These include the cervix, ovaries, uterus, fallopian tubes, vagina and vulva.
Approximately 5000 women are diagnosed with gynecological cancer each year in Australia, and almost a third of these will not survive this disease. In the United States, about 98,000 new cancer cases were reported during 2015 (American Cancer Society).
